How to Set Up Google Analytics 4 for a Kenyan Business

The default GA4 setup records page views and little else. Here is how to set it up so it shows which marketing brings you enquiries and sales.

Set Up GA4 Properly

To set up Google Analytics 4 properly, create a GA4 property and web data stream, install the Google tag on every page, mark the actions that matter to your business as key events, track WhatsApp and phone clicks, set data retention, filter out your own team's visits, and link GA4 to Google Ads and Search Console. The basic installation takes under an hour. The configuration that makes the data useful takes a little longer, and it is the part most businesses skip.

GA4 is free, and for most small and mid-sized businesses in Kenya it is the main tool for understanding where website visitors come from and what they do. Set up badly, though, it gives you charts of page views that don't answer the question every owner asks: which marketing brings in customers?

Why does the default GA4 setup fall short?

When you first install GA4, it records page views, sessions and a few automatic events through a feature called enhanced measurement. That is a start, but it misses the actions that matter most to many Kenyan businesses.

  • It doesn't know which actions are valuable. A visit to your contact page and a submitted enquiry form look much the same until you tell GA4 which one counts.
  • WhatsApp and call clicks may go uncounted. Many customers here would rather chat or call than fill in a form. Unless you track those clicks, your best channels look weaker than they are.
  • Your own team's visits are counted. Staff checking the website every day can distort the numbers on a small site.
  • Data retention can be short. Detailed event data may be kept for less time than you expect unless you change the setting.

Step 1: Create your GA4 property and data stream

Sign in to Google Analytics with a Google account the business controls. Avoid using a staff member's personal Gmail. If that person leaves, you can lose access to years of data.

  1. In Admin, create a new account for the business, then a property inside it.
  2. Set the property time zone to Kenya (East Africa Time) and the currency to Kenyan shillings, so reports match your working day and your accounts.
  3. Choose your industry and business size when asked.
  4. Create a web data stream for your website's address.

The data stream gives you a Measurement ID that starts with "G-". You'll need it in the next step.

Step 2: Install the Google tag

The Google tag is a small piece of code that sends data from your website to GA4. It must be on every page. There are three common ways to install it.

Through your website platform

WordPress plugins, Shopify, Wix and most website builders have a place to paste your Measurement ID. This is the simplest route for a basic site.

Through Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager lets you manage GA4 and other tracking tags from one place, without editing your website code each time. It is the better choice if you plan to track WhatsApp clicks, calls, form submissions and ad conversions, which most businesses should.

Directly in the website code

Your developer can paste the Google tag into the head section of every page. This works, but every later change needs a developer.

After installing, open your website in another tab and check the Realtime report in GA4. You should see yourself as an active user within a minute or so.

Step 3: Check enhanced measurement

In your data stream settings, enhanced measurement automatically tracks several actions, including scrolls, outbound link clicks, site search, video engagement and file downloads. It can also track form interactions.

Keep the useful ones on. Be careful relying on automatic form tracking alone, since it doesn't work reliably with every form. For enquiry forms that matter, set up a dedicated event that fires only when the form is successfully submitted, such as on a thank-you page or a success message.

Step 4: Track WhatsApp clicks, calls and forms

This step turns GA4 from a traffic counter into a tool that shows where enquiries come from.

WhatsApp clicks

Track clicks on links that start a WhatsApp chat, such as links to wa.me or api.whatsapp.com. In Google Tag Manager, create a trigger for clicks on those links and send an event to GA4, for example "whatsapp_click".

You won't see what was said in the chat, but you will see which page, campaign and source led to it.

Phone calls

Track clicks on phone links, which start with "tel:". Mobile visitors often tap your number rather than fill in a form. Send an event such as "phone_click".

Enquiry and quote forms

Send an event such as "generate_lead" when a form is successfully submitted. Google recommends standard event names like this for common actions, which keeps your reports consistent.

Purchases

If you sell online, track purchases with the "purchase" event and include the order value. Most e-commerce platforms can do this through an integration.

Step 5: Mark your key events

In March 2024, Google renamed "conversions" in GA4 to "key events". Key events are the actions you tell GA4 matter most.

Go to Admin, then Events or Key events, and mark the events that represent real business value: form submissions, WhatsApp clicks, phone clicks and purchases. Don't mark everything. Marking scrolls or page views as key events makes your reports look busy and hides what matters.

Keep the list to three to five actions. A clinic might mark appointment requests, calls and WhatsApp clicks. A B2B firm might mark quote requests and demo bookings.

Step 6: Set data retention and filter internal traffic

Two settings under Admin are easy to miss and annoying to fix later.

Data retention

GA4 keeps detailed event-level data for a limited time. For standard properties, you can choose two months or 14 months. Set it to 14 months so you can compare this year with last year in explorations. Standard reports use aggregated data and aren't affected in the same way, but the longer setting gives you more room for detailed analysis.

Internal traffic

Define your office IP addresses as internal traffic in the data stream settings, then activate the internal traffic filter. Test the filter first, then switch it on. On small sites, staff visits can make a real difference to the numbers.

If your team works from many locations or mobile data, IP filtering won't catch everything. That's normal. Do what you can and keep it in mind when reading small numbers.

Step 7: Link Google Ads and Search Console

Linking GA4 to your other Google tools makes the data far more useful.

  • Google Ads: link your account so you can import GA4 key events into Google Ads as conversions. This lets automated bidding optimise for real enquiries, not just clicks.
  • Search Console: link it to see which Google searches bring visitors to your site, alongside what those visitors did.

Both links are set up in Admin, under Product links. You need the right access level on both accounts.

Step 8: Tag your campaign links

GA4 can only report a source correctly if it knows where a visit came from. Visits from Google Ads, if linked, and normal Google search are detected automatically. Many others aren't.

Add UTM parameters to links you control, such as social media posts, email newsletters, SMS campaigns, QR codes on flyers and links in your WhatsApp Business profile or catalogue. Use a simple, consistent naming pattern, all in lower case. "facebook", "Facebook" and "fb" will show up as three separate sources.

Google's Campaign URL Builder creates tagged links for free.

How do you handle privacy and consent?

Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019 governs how businesses collect and use personal data. Analytics cookies and tracking can collect personal data, so treat it seriously.

  • Publish a clear privacy notice that explains what you track and why.
  • Consider a cookie consent banner, especially if you have visitors from the EU or UK, where consent rules are strict.
  • If you use a consent banner, set up Google's consent mode so tags respect visitors' choices.
  • Don't send personal information, such as names, phone numbers or email addresses, to GA4. Google's policies prohibit it.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. If you handle sensitive data, take advice from an advocate who works on data protection.

How do you know the setup is working?

Before relying on the data, test it.

  1. Use DebugView in GA4, or Tag Assistant, to confirm events fire when you submit a form or click a WhatsApp link.
  2. Check the Realtime report while you test.
  3. After a day or two, check that key events appear in your reports.
  4. Compare the number of form submissions in GA4 with the number of enquiries you actually received. They won't match exactly, but a big gap means something is broken.

What should you look at each month?

Once GA4 is set up, a short monthly review covers most needs.

  • Traffic acquisition: which channels brought visitors.
  • Key events by source: which channels brought enquiries, not just visits.
  • Landing pages: which pages turn visitors into enquiries, and which lose them.
  • Search Console data: which searches bring visitors, and where you rank.

Then compare GA4 with your lead log or CRM to see which enquiries became paying clients. GA4 shows where leads came from. Your lead log shows whether they turned into money.

Common GA4 mistakes

  • Using a personal Gmail account as the only owner. Add at least two business-controlled admin accounts.
  • Marking too many key events. It hides the actions that matter.
  • Leaving data retention at two months. You lose detailed history you'll want later.
  • Not tracking WhatsApp and calls. Your best channels look weaker than they are.
  • Untagged campaign links. Social, email and SMS traffic ends up mislabelled.
  • Never testing. Broken tracking can go unnoticed for months.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Analytics 4 free?

Yes. The standard version of GA4 is free and suits most small and mid-sized businesses. Google also sells a paid enterprise version, Google Analytics 360, for very large organisations.

What happened to Universal Analytics?

Google stopped processing data in standard Universal Analytics properties in July 2023 and replaced it with GA4. If your site still has only an old Universal Analytics tag, it isn't collecting new data.

How do I track WhatsApp clicks in GA4?

Use Google Tag Manager to create a trigger for clicks on WhatsApp links, such as wa.me links, and send an event to GA4. Then mark that event as a key event so it appears in your enquiry reports.

What are key events in GA4?

Key events are the actions you tell GA4 matter most to your business, such as form submissions, calls, WhatsApp clicks or purchases. Google renamed conversions to key events in GA4 in March 2024.

How long does GA4 keep data?

For standard properties, detailed event data can be kept for two or 14 months, depending on your setting. Set it to 14 months in Admin under data retention so you have more history for detailed analysis.
