Google Business Profile Optimisation for Kenyan Businesses

Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a local customer sees. Here is how to fill in every part of it properly, and keep it working.

Optimise Your Business Profile

To optimise a Google Business Profile, verify it, use your real business name, choose the most accurate primary category, fill in every relevant field, add real photos, post updates regularly, earn and reply to reviews, and keep your details identical to those on your website. A complete, active profile helps you appear in Google Maps and local search, and gives customers the information they need to call, visit or book.

For many Kenyan businesses, the profile matters more than the website. Someone searching "pharmacy near me" in Kilimani or "car service Mombasa Road" will often decide from the profile alone, without ever opening your site. This guide works through the profile section by section.

If you're new to local search, start with our guide on how to rank on Google Maps in Kenya, which explains how Google decides who ranks. This article focuses on the profile itself.

Start with ownership and verification

Before optimising anything, make sure the business controls the profile.

  • Use a business-controlled Google account as the primary owner, not a staff member's personal Gmail.
  • Add at least one more owner or manager from within the business, so you never lose access.
  • Remove access for former staff and agencies you no longer work with.
  • Complete verification. Google may ask for a video of your premises, signage and tools of the trade, or use another method. An unverified profile performs poorly.

Business name

Use the name customers see on your signage, invoices and website. Nothing more.

Adding keywords, locations or slogans, such as "Mama Njeri's Salon Best Braids Nairobi", breaks Google's guidelines. It can bring short-term gains but risks suspension, and competitors can report it.

Categories

Categories are one of the strongest signals of what your business is.

Primary category

Choose the single most specific category that describes your main business. A dental clinic should choose "Dentist" or a more specific option such as "Cosmetic dentist" if that is genuinely its main service. Search for options in the category field, since Google offers thousands.

Secondary categories

Add a few secondary categories for other services you genuinely offer. A hotel with a restaurant might add "Restaurant". Don't add categories just to appear in more searches. Irrelevant categories can weaken the profile's focus.

Check competitors who rank well for your main searches and note their categories. It's a quick way to spot options you've missed.

Address and service area

  • Storefront businesses that receive customers should show their address and make sure the map pin sits on the right building.
  • Service-area businesses, such as plumbers, cleaners and mobile mechanics, can hide their address and list the areas they serve instead.
  • Hybrid businesses can show both an address and service areas.

In parts of Kenya where addresses are informal, add clear directions in your description and photos of your entrance, so customers can find you.

Phone, website and hours

  • Phone: use a number that is answered during business hours. A Safaricom or Airtel number is fine, as long as someone picks up.
  • Website: link to your home page or, for multi-location businesses, the page for that location. Add UTM tags so you can see profile visits separately in Google Analytics 4.
  • Hours: keep regular hours accurate and add special hours for public holidays such as Jamhuri Day and Christmas.
  • Booking links: if you take appointments online, add your booking link where the option is available.

Google ended chat on Business Profiles in July 2024. If customers like to message you, put your WhatsApp link on your website and in your posts, where it's easy to find.

Description

You have up to 750 characters. Use them to say what you do, who you serve, where you are and what makes you different, in plain language.

A good description for a physiotherapy clinic might mention its main treatments, the areas it serves, insurance accepted and evening appointments. Don't include links, promotions or keyword lists. Google's guidelines restrict them.

Services and products

Services

List your main services, with a short description of each and a price where that makes sense. Services help Google match you to specific searches and help customers see what you offer.

Products

Retailers and businesses with packaged offers can add products with photos, descriptions and prices. A hardware shop might show its main brands. A salon might list its popular packages.

Attributes

Attributes are extra details such as wheelchair access, free Wi-Fi, outdoor seating, women-led or the payment methods you accept. Available attributes depend on your category. Fill in every one that applies. They help customers decide and answer questions before they ask.

Photos and videos

Real photos build trust, and profiles with good images tend to get more engagement.

  • Logo and cover photo: clear and recognisable.
  • Exterior: your building and entrance from the street, so people can find you.
  • Interior: your shop, clinic, office or workspace.
  • Team: the people customers will meet, with their permission.
  • Work: finished jobs, products and services in action.
  • Short videos: a walk-through of your premises or a short clip of your work.

Add new photos every month or so. Avoid stock images and heavy filters. Customers can also add photos, so check them occasionally and report any that are inappropriate.

Posts

Posts let you share updates, offers and events on your profile. Use them for:

  • New services or products
  • Seasonal offers, such as back-to-school or festive promotions
  • Events, workshops or open days
  • Useful tips related to your work

Post at least a few times a month. Include a clear photo and a button such as "Call now" or "Learn more".

Reviews

Reviews influence both your ranking and whether customers choose you.

Getting reviews

  • Ask every customer, at the right moment, such as after a completed job or a successful appointment.
  • Share your review link by WhatsApp or SMS with a short, polite message.
  • Put a QR code that links to your review form at the counter or on receipts.

Don't offer rewards for reviews, don't ask only happy customers, and never post or buy fake reviews. Google can remove reviews and restrict profiles that break these rules.

Replying to reviews

Reply to every review. Thank people for positive ones, ideally mentioning the service they used. For negative reviews, stay calm, apologise where appropriate, and offer to resolve the issue offline. Future customers read your replies to judge how you treat people.

Questions and AI answers

Google has been replacing the old questions-and-answers section in Maps with an AI "Ask" feature that answers from information Google holds about your business. The best way to make those answers accurate is to keep your profile, website and reviews complete and up to date.

Keep it consistent with the rest of the web

Make sure your name, address, phone number and hours match on your website, Facebook and Instagram pages, and directory listings. Inconsistent details reduce Google's confidence in your information.

What if you have more than one location?

Businesses with several branches, such as pharmacies, clinics, restaurants or retail chains, need one profile for each location that serves customers in person.

  • Use the same brand name on every profile, without adding the location to the name unless it's part of how customers know that branch.
  • Give each location its own phone number where possible, so calls reach the right team.
  • Link each profile to a location page on your website with that branch's address, hours, services and directions.
  • Manage them together using a business group in Google Business Profile, so you can update hours or post offers across all branches.
  • Collect reviews for each branch. Customers want to know what that specific location is like.

Don't create profiles for locations where you don't have staff or don't receive customers. Google treats those as a breach of its guidelines.

Monitor and maintain

Your profile isn't a one-time task.

  • Weekly: reply to reviews and check for suggested edits from Google or the public.
  • Monthly: add photos, publish posts and review performance data for calls, website clicks and direction requests.
  • Quarterly: check categories, services, attributes and hours.

Google sometimes accepts edits suggested by the public. Check that your details haven't been changed without your knowledge.

Mistakes that get profiles suspended

  • Keywords or locations in the business name
  • A virtual office or address where you don't receive customers or staff
  • Several profiles for the same business at one location
  • Fake or incentivised reviews
  • Big changes made all at once, which can trigger re-verification

If your profile is suspended, fix the problem and request reinstatement through Google's support process.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free. Google doesn't charge for listing, verification, posts or reviews.

How do I verify my Google Business Profile in Kenya?

Google chooses the method, which may include recording a video of your premises, signage and equipment, or another option shown in your profile. Follow the instructions closely. Verification can take several days.

How many categories should I choose?

Choose one accurate primary category and a few secondary categories for services you genuinely offer. Adding unrelated categories doesn't help and can weaken your profile's relevance.

Can I respond to fake reviews?

Yes. Reply calmly and factually, then report the review through your profile if it breaks Google's policies. Google decides whether to remove it.

How often should I update my profile?

Reply to reviews weekly, add photos and posts monthly, and check your categories, services and hours every quarter. Update holiday hours before each public holiday.
